Spectaculum Romanum: A Journey into Ancient Times

Hopkins’ annual Spectaculum Romanum took place in Upper Heath this year on Wednesday, May 17, with eighth grade students proudly showcasing their projects amidst a whirlwind of curious spectators.  Their project displays covered a wide range of topics from Roman times including medicine, roads, chariot racing, aqueducts, army tactics, fashion, domestic life, architecture, food, weapons and mosaics.

Following the presentations in Heath, a special dramatic performance of Pyramus and Thisbe by Mrs. Shea’s class was presented in the outdoor theater behind Thompson. Afterward the 7th and 8th graders broke into small groups to participate in a series of activities. These included learning about the Roman Military with parent Carlos Lourenco, learning to throw a javelin with Coach Charlie O'Connell, creating coins, decorating shields, creating masks with Mr. Ziou, playing board games, and quiz games. One group also constructed miniature catapults and ended the festivities with a mini-marshmallow battle in front of Thompson Hall.

A special thanks to Miguel Pizarro and the entire Classics Department for producing a memorable and informative journey into ancient times.
