Hopkins: 9 Williams: 0

It was with a certain anticipation that the Hilltopers played host to the Williams School. A new team, a new season and a new field had much to do with it. Last year in New London we had been frustrated by a tied game and not much to show for. This would altogether be a different kind of game.

The Hopkins squad started strongly with forays deep in Williams territory which paid off fairly soon. Captain Cally Bralver ’08, sent a rocket from the edge of the box that caught our opponents’ keeper off guard. A few minutes later Sarah Levine ’10, pushed a ball to Hayley Grunebaum ’10, who faked the keeper and found the back of the net. Not content with that, Sarah scored one on her own a minute later. As the Williams’defense was urged on to hold the line, Shelby Galvin ’11, was taken down in front of the goal. She took advantage of the penalty kick to add another point for Hopkins. Before the half, Stephanie Parente ’09 and Sarah would add goals for the Hilltopers.

In spite of Williams courageous play, the second half was mostly played on the visitors’ side of the field. Hopkins worked on possession, and denying chances to their opponents. Cally, Erin Kinney ’09 and Julia Jaffe ’09, added points while Tyler Chukwu’08, Meghan Davis ’09 and Janay Sylvester ’08 anchored the defense and did not give many opportunities to their opponents. Jenny Kress ’08 and Katie MacDougald ’10 recorded their first shut out of the season.

Although we know that there will much more challenging games to play, this was a promising beginning for Hopkins.
