It was a long, but scenic stagecoach ride up to the Kent School today. Still warm from yesterday's strong win versus Rye, our Hilltoppers were quickly able to find their form in the Bourke Racquet Center, which includes four indoor and two outdoor tennis courts. Our doubles contest took place first, with Jacob and Will seizing a definitive victory against their opponents in the #3 spot. Volleys, overheads, poaches and strong serves were all part of their winning strategy. Matthew and Karun also earned a "W" with powerful serves and returns. In the interest of time, Andy and Jay's match was pulled after Hop earned the doubles point; things were looking good with Andy serving for the match at 7-6.
In the singles bouts, Lucio finished first and yielded no games to his opponent for the second day in a row. Alex and Teo took a commanding lead early in each of their matches, but their counterparts kept them on the court with long rallies in their second sets. Jay and Andy played nearly flawless tennis in their singles duels.
The match at #1 was another story, however, as Kent's Andy Chen matched Max's power and determination throughout the match. Max had taken the first set and even had gone up a break in the second, only to see his lead evaporate as Andy Chen claimed a few points at the no-ad deuce points. Chen even fended off match points in the second-set tiebreaker, ultimately winning it 8-6. The ten-point tiebreaker for the match was no less of a rollercoaster as Max and Chen fought jumped back and forth for the lead until Max was able to carve out a two-point lead at 9-7, and finally closed the match 10-8. As the last match to finish, Max and Chen treated an audience of parents, coaches and players to an impressive display of tennis with an exciting finish.
Thanks again for your support. Our team takes to the road on the big bus once again this Saturday, where we will face the Master's School, which is in our FAA conference.
