FAA Make-up meet 9/28
On Wed 9/14, the kick-off, all-league FAA meet was canceled on the boys’ side when thunder and lightning pulled them from the course. The race was made up on Wednesday 9/28 at Sherwood Island State Park.
Freshman Nic Burtson was fastest over the 5k course, pulling away from the 2nd place runner in the last quarter mile or so to win by six seconds, in 17:13.
Junior captain Jonah Norwitt was 2nd for Hopkins, and 5th overall, finishing just behind two runners from Brunswick. Freshman Jake Wang was 10th overall, and senior captain Andrew Kindseth was 13th. Geroge Wang and Connor Hartigan finished in 15th and 17th, with Eric Martin in 25th rounding out the varsity scoring.
The varsity boys as a whole were disappointed not to have run the races that their training (and previous race at Canterbury) shows them capable of, and they are confident that they will execute better next time.
On the day, the boys lost to Brunswick, and defeated the other teams. The meet was scored dually.
Hopkins 34, Brunswick 24
Hopkins 15, Greens Farms Academy 45
Hopkins 19, King 43
Hopkins 15, Rye 48
Hopkins 19, St Luke's 44
Hopkins 19, Masters 43
On the JV side, there were some very strong results, as well as some break-out performances. Sophomore Ben Sanger, injured last fall, ran a sparkling 20:06 in what was one of his first cross-country races ever. Jakob Vucelik-Frick, a sophomore newcomer ran a very impressive 20:17. Ben Walker, junior, barely able to run in his first two seasons, turned in a time of 20:23. He was followed closely in 20:25 by eighth-grader Ethan Woolbert. Seventh-grader Blake Braun was next in in 20:52. David Judd in ninth grade, working himself back into shape after a layoff, ran a solid 21:06. Will Cooper, another seventh grader, ran 21:16, followed by sophomore Carter Richards in 21:!7 Ben Nields and Luke El-Fishawy ran mostly together to run 21:33 and 21:38, respectively, times they will be able to build from and improve on soon. Freshman Burton Lyng-Olsen ran a very sold 22:06. Senior captain Hunter Congdon similarly ran a solid race (22:23) that he will be eager to use as a springboard to a faster time in the near future. Freshman Nathan Ahn ran well, as did Brody Lustberg, Liam Day, Matthew Vasseur, and Jaden Buxbaum.
