Pie-Baking Master Class a Success!

Twenty Hopkins parents and students had the unique experience to attend a pie-baking master class taught by Westville’s Naomi Senzer at the CitySeed Sanctuary Kitchen on Wednesday, November 8. Over the course of three hours, the family teams had a spirited time learning to make pies together, as well as learning more about CitySeed and it’s many local programs. By the end of the class, the group made twenty pies from scratch, both traditional apple and cranberry apple pies. Each team was able to take one pie to bake at home, and the remaining ten pies were given to the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen (DESK) to distribute to New Haven families in need for Thanksgiving. Proceeds from the class, which was conceived by Alissa Davis, Director of Community Service, were used to purchase an additional 50 pies from local bakeries for DESK’s Thanksgiving needs.

Participants commented that the class was a wonderful community event full of joy and good will. Our community service team hope to arrange similar events in the future. If you have any ideas for other service-oriented events, please email Alissa Davis. Alissa would like to thank CitySeed for generously providing the space for baking, Naomi Senzer for her tireless work in planning, shopping and teaching the group, Susan Stone for all her help at the event, as well as all the students and parent bakers for participating in this community-building event.

Naomi Senzer - Westville’s “Pie Boss”
Urban farmer and baker Naomi Senzer grew up baking and eating pies made from locally picked fruit baked in store-bought crusts (GASP!). It wasn't until 1995 that she met the man with whom she'd fall in love and raise a family (Hopkins’ own Brad Ridky.) He was the one who asked that all important question "Would you bake me a strawberry rhubarb pie?” - and led her to become truly passionate about the art of pie-making. She has since learned to appreciate the superiority of a homemade flaky crust, and shares the pursuit of the perfect pie with her husband and children, who at ages 9 and 11, have become pie connoisseurs in their own right. Since helping to launch the Beecher Park Hi Fi Pie Fest in 2013, Naomi has enjoyed recognition as Westville’s “Pie Boss,” and has participated in the making and tasting of hundreds of pies. Naomi is very excited to share the joy of pie making and the fruits of her labor with Hopkins families and Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen in this year’s pie workshop.
