A Hilltopper Chat with Coach Connolly

Dan Tencic '21
Dan Tencic '21 recently sat down with Peg Connolly, health teacher, to discuss her coaching career at Hopkins.
What sports do you coach at Hopkins?
This year I coached JV Girls Soccer, 3rds Boys Basketball, and Junior School Girls Lacrosse.

What sports do you enjoy the most?
Basketball is one of my favorite sports. I like the strategy and speed of the game. I also love soccer; I just love being outside. I’d say soccer is my favorite to play, and basketball to coach.

What are your favorite memories as a Hopkins Coach?
Mostly getting to know kids and just having fun. It wasn’t big wins or anything like that. Some teams are just goofy and nice, and it’s the people, not the wins and losses, that are the best part of coaching.

What’s your main goal as a coach?
Obviously to increase skill level, but also to give kids a chance to get better and to enjoy what they’re doing; teaching the fundamentals is very important.

Do you have a sports idol?
When I was younger it was Mia Hamm. I dreamed of being on the US National Team and playing in the olympics, and she was one of the big names when I was young.

What’s your biggest coaching challenge?
Balancing different goals. I want to get everyone playing time, but also want to compete and win. Some kids want to get better and win, while others are more about socializing, so meshing those two is hard.

Are there any changes you would make to Hopkins Athletics?
I would like to offer informals after school. Having an afterschool option where you can learn to play a sport or do weight training would be an interesting one to have.
