The Boys were excited to take on St. Luke's at home on what can only be described as perfect tennis weather. Today was also a special day for seniors, and with so many home matches taking place our varsity courts had amassed a sizable crowd who came to cheer on our young competitors. Hop fans were rewarded with a surfeit of exciting match play.
For the third time in a row, Jay was the first to chalk a point for the squad. Our lanky freshman had to fight for the points against his opponent today, but his consistent baseline game earned him the "W". Seconds later, Andy also came to report a victory for the HIlltoppers. Our young southpaw took a commanding lead from the get-go against St. Luke's own left-handed Adam Rizvi. Andy closed out the match with solid all-court play. Johnny added another notch on his racquet today with a decisive victory at the number-four spot, which helped to put the Hilltoppers up 3-0.
Our doubles teams were on fire today, and we coaches were so pleased to see just how strong our pairings have become over the last few weeks. All three teams put on a doubles clinic, with excellent serving and control of the net. It was fitting that our senior and Captain was one-half of the team (the other being our steady sophomore Matthew) that clinched today's match. It was impressive the way the two moved together to cover the full expanse of the court. Equally impressive was the feisty win that Jeremy and Luke carved out in the number-two match. The two worked in tandem to own the net and shut down the strong play of their rivals. Finally, Lucio and Emmett played a wonderful match at the number-three spot, which ended with a memorable overhead whiff and a recovery lob that baffled their opponents and wowed the spectators. Awesome Job!!
We also had a number-one singles match, of course, and today's was a doozy. St. Luke's Zach Amendola had flashes of brilliance in the first set that had our Teo running from corner to corner. After eating a banana and rethinking his return-of-serve strategy, Teo was able to take control of enough points to come back from 5-2 in the first set to even the match at 6-6, whereupon he went on a 7-0 point spree in the tiebreaker. The tide of good fortune also shifted in Teo's favor for the second set as well, and he was able to prevent Amendola from winning the deuce points.
And so Hopkins bounced back from Tuesday's tough loss to GFA with an equally lopsided victory. We are looking forward to our final two matches this week, first versus Hamden Hall and our last to Greenwich Country Day. Thanks to Johnny's mom for the snacks and to Jeremy for the cake! Thanks also to the parents and students who came to support the boys. GO HOP!
