Hopkins faced their toughest opponent this season today, and wound up on top! The boys spent the weekend gearing up for three days in a row of matches, with today's contest, the most challenging, being the first of the series. APs, tests, and whatever else that is thrown at our tenistas on a weekly basis took priority during the rainy weekend. But they no doubt dreamed about tennis at night. And today's results certainly rivaled those dreams...
Singles and doubles hit the courts promptly at 4:30. First match to come off did so in our favor, although due to unfortunate circumstances. #1 Bruin Monahan injured his back at the beginning of the second set against Teo, who had come running to the courts from an AP exam. This loss was soon matched with a tough loss by our #2 Doubles squad against a strong duo. Capt. Andy and Jay were next to put a point on the board for us with a solid win against a strong rival. Lucio added another point for us with his steady play. The score belies the difficulty level of the match, however, as Lucio battled through an untold amount of long rallies to best his opponent in straight sets. Beautiful tennis! Although Alex lost his match today, he met the level of tennis that his experienced senior rival is expected play. A brilliant match with lots of cheering from both sides.
The final two matches ended within a minute of each other. Last to go out was our dynamic duo of D3 Bryan and Lucas. They were hot out of the chute and stunned Brunswick 6-1 in the first set. The D3 Bruins gathered some strength in the second set but Lucas and Bryan kept control to claim it, and the entire match, 6-3. Just as our clincher was being recorded in the books, #2 Max squared up a topsy-turvy contest against Brunswick's more experienced Zimmerman. Max had charged early in the first set but lost control of a 5-1 lead to fall 7-5. Zimmerman continued his run against Max in the second, but suddenly Max began to collect himself and to employ some "old school" strategy that got him back into the match and evened things out 6-6. After claiming a tight tiebreaker our Max came out on top as Zimmerman retired the match.
Good job, boys! Our work isn't over, but it's important to celebrate this victory against a worthy opponent! We take to the courts again tomorrow, in New Canaan, versus St. Luke's.
