It was a Senior Day for the ages. Teo, Andy and Jay had geared up for one last chance to earn a "W" against Westport rival GFA, and the entire team delivered in an exciting fashion.
Max faced a difficult challenge today against the #1 Dragon, who hit punishing returns and kept our young caballero on the run. Next court over, Andy and Jay got into a rhythm a few games in and never looked back. The points were intense and the victory for these two seniors was sweet. But Jacob and Bryan beat them both to the scoreboard with a decisive win at D2. Teo couldn't have had a better Senior day. He defeated the #2 Dragon with incredible control of the ball. Although many of the points were long, most of them went in Teo's favor. And then, Hopkins sat at 3-1 for a long, long, long time. Every other match was closely knotted and in the first sets were led by GFA. Alex dropped the first set 2-6 to a powerful hitter, Lucio went 3-6 against a lefty who seemed able to return every shot, and Lucas and Karun were down a break in their first set. Yet our mighty goats were able to find the will to stay in their contests despite the physical and mental challenges they faced. Alex and Lucio were able to square their matches and force the final tiebreaker, and Lucas and Karun took the first set and stayed on serve in the second. Alex's opponent would not let him hold an early lead, and the two went back and forth, fending off match points until Alex was able to claim it 12-10. Excellent work! Lucio also went through a true endurance competition in the second set and the final tiebreaker. After some amazing recoveries and thwarting two match points, Lucio finally was able to seal the match 15-13, just mere minutes after Lucas and Karun were able to claim their own win.
It was a great day for Hopkins tennis! We're excited to have earned this win and are so proud of our three seniors, Hopeful Youths every one of them, and we know that they are off to accomplish great things. We plan to make the most of the few weeks we have with them, including a match vs. Avon Old Farms on Thursday and a the FAA tournament on Saturday. Wish us luck!!
