Junior quarterback John Powers threw for 87 yards and three touchdowns. Powers also ran 13 times for 105 yards and 1 rushing touchdown to lead the Hilltoppers to a 27-24 Fairchester League victory over 4-time defending Fairchester League champion Brunswick. Oh yeah, Powers also recovered a fumble and made many key tackles to help secure the win.
The Hilltopper defense held Brunswick without an offensive touchdown until 4 minutes, 55 seconds remained in the game. Senior Doug Prusoff had a game-high 12 tackles, broke up two passes and had a key quarterback pressure. Defensive back Ben Gusberg and defensive end Jim Perkins contributed with seven tackles apiece.
Hopkins (3-0, 3-0) took a 14-0 lead on Powers' 9-yard touchdown pass to Tim Delaney and Powers' 59-yard TD run. Powers threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Jim Perkins and completed a 27-yard touchdown pass to to Tim Delaney to put the hilltoppers ahead 27-10 in the 4th quarter.
Brunswick was able to score twice in the last 5 minutes, but the hilltoppers were able to run out the clock for an impressive victory.
