We went to play at Greens Farms on a beautiful sunny afternoon. The game started in earnest from the get go with furious attacks from the host team that seemed to have much to prove on that day. And prove they did as about 16 minutes into the contest they obtained a free kick at the edge of Hopkins box which deflected off the cross bar but into the goal. Although there was as much luck (or lack thereof) as much skill in the resulting score, we were rattled for a few minutes and as the Dragons continued to spit fire, a loose ball was kicked out of the reach of our keeper for the second time. For the rest of the contest, and especially during the second half, the Hopkins team gave at least as much as it took and pushed very hard to change the score. From a spectator point of view it was probably a great display of purposeful energy and courage. But it did not translate into goals.
The first loss of the season always hurt no matter when it takes place. Still, when it is early in the season, it allows us to absorb it, learn from it and go back to work and play with renewed determination. That is what we will do. Next game is scheduled at Miss Porter’s on Saturday.
