Head of the Housatonic

On October 9, twenty-two Hopkins rowers competed in five events at the Head of the Housatonic.  The New Haven Rowing Club, whose rowing shells (boats) and boathouse Hopkins uses daily, hosted the regatta, with Indian Well State Park in Shelton as the hub.  Over 500 boats competed, representing high schools, colleges, clubs, and individuals.

We are proud of Hopkins’ unprecedented results in a competitive field of many teams.  Highlights included:

The boys’ quad (Steven Bell ‘11, Dylan Cutler ‘12, Brendan Donovan ‘13, and Michael Holtz ‘13) placed 9th out of 15, with a time of 19:45 on the 6 km course.

The girls’ quad (Emily Patton ‘13, Kathleen Kranzlin ‘12, Maddie Prangley ‘13, and Kelsey Handelman ‘13) placed 12th out of 16, with a time of 21:20.  The race was very close, and Hopkins missed 9th, 10th, and 11th place by a margin of less than 10 seconds.

Another boys’ quad (Sam Weinreb ‘13, Alex Leffell ‘11, Harry Kane ‘14, and Matthew Vine ‘13) placed 13th out of 15, with a time of 21:41.

Fighting the strongest winds of the day, the girls’ eight (Harry Kane ‘14 (cox), Laura Rozier ‘11, Emily Patton ‘13, Maddie Prangley ‘13, Cailin Gillespie ‘11 (captain), Natalie Magioncalda ‘12, Abbi Leighton ‘13, Julia Weber ‘12, and Imani Canton ‘14) finished 17th out of 19 with a time of 23:21.

Also rowing in the worst of the wind was the boys’ four (Emma Leighton ‘11 (cox), Drew Kelly ‘11 (captain), Gabriel Shoglow-Rubenstein ‘11, Mickey Herbert ‘11, and Alex Leffell ‘11), who finished 23rd out of 25, with a time of 24:07.

(Coaches Kate Weber (bow) and Giuliana Vetrano (cox) were part of the Saugatuck Rowing Club’s Women’s Masters’ Eight, which placed 6th out of 10, with a time of 17:35 — narrowly missing 5th place by 2 seconds.

Thank you to all the parents and fans who came out to support our team with cheers, patience, and of course, food and water!

The crew team will next compete in the Head of the Fish Regatta in Saratoga Springs, NY on October 31
