On Saturday, March 3, Hopkins sent two “All-Star” teams comprising 7th and 8th graders to the Connecticut Middle School Science Bowl. This was the first year Hopkins participated in this competition. The two All-Star teams were selected from a group of 25 Junior School students who attended weekly practices over the past several months.
The Connecticut Middle School Science Bowl is a state-wide academic competition that tests students' knowledge in all areas of science and math. Middle school students are quizzed in a fast-paced question-and-answer format similar to the game show Jeopardy. Competing teams from diverse backgrounds are comprised of four students and two substitutes with a coach/teacher for each team.
Out of 24 teams, both evenly-matched Hopkins teams (named "Team Maroon" and "Team Grey") qualified from the round-robin competition into Saturday's State Championship Round of eight. In the quarter finals Team Maroon ended up just one bonus question shy to make it to the next step--facing Team Grey in the semi-finals. In both the semi-final and final matches, Team Grey overcame significant deficits against determined competition to emerge undefeated and victorious. By winning the Connecticut tournament, Hopkins Grey Team will represent Connecticut in late April in Washington D.C. for the National Science Bowl (all expenses paid!), sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. Congratulations to both teams for their incredible achievement!
The Hopkins All-Star teams consisted of:
Hopkins Maroon: Andrew Sedlack (captain) Henry Hanlon Chloe Glass Kristine Ahn Michael Zhou Robert Deberardine
Hopkins Grey: Arman Mitra (captain) Simon Doss-Gollin Dunia Habboosh Emily Malison Carmen Ciardiello Evan Pham
Hopkins is a private middle school and high school for grades 7-12. Located on a campus overlooking New Haven, CT, the School takes pride in its intellectually curious students as well as its dedicated faculty and staff.
