The Lady Hilltoppers defeat the Hornets 5-1

Last year Hopkins visited Hamden Hall at their homecoming and squeezed a 1-0 narrow victory after a much disputed encounter. This past Friday, the Hornets were visiting Hopkins and were ready for pay back. It was not to be.

The tension was palpable as the two teams started the match somewhat nervously with a few awkward passes and misfired shots. Eventually the game picked up in composure and intensity with the host team putting a lot of pressure on the visitors. Twelve minutes into the game, Lizzy BARNA ’17 managed to head a poorly cleared ball over the Hamden Hall keeper and put Hopkins up on the scoreboard. From that point on, with back and forth attacks and counter attacks the two teams battled for every ball, with Hopkins having the run of the play but unable to beat the courageous Hamden Hall keeper.

The second half of the game would be more productive for the Hilltoppers. With about 50 minutes to play, Mia CIARDIELLO’17 found a seam in Hamden Hall’s defense and delivered a ripe ball for Dana MONZ ’14 who fired it in the back of the net with great precision. Two minutes later, Dana surged again from the back, ran on a cross from Alex MC CRAVEN ’17 and sent another perfect volley putting the score at 3-0 for the host team. By then, spectators had grown into a roaring and cheering crowd to the great joy of the squad decided to thank them with renewed energy and, at times, brilliant play. Among others Sydney GEYER ’14 was particularly assertive and after a scramble in front of Hamden Hall’s goal, she managed to push a ball pass their keeper and bring the score to 4-0.

The Hornets were not yet ready to concede though and they fought valiantly to turn things around. After some pressure in the Hopkins box, they were accorded a penalty kick which allowed them to come on the score board at 67 minutes into the game.

Undeterred, the Hilltoppers continued to push hard and with two minutes to play, Elle CHUKWU ’14 found the back of the net once again.

This was a great game to play, coach and watch on the Hill on a beautiful fall afternoon.
