This morning, the Parent Council hosted Mr. Coleman Casey, Partner at Shipman & Goodwin, LLP.
Mr. Casey discussed the risks for teenage drivers and their legal responsibilities, including state mandated curfews for drivers under the age of 18, driving with passengers, and the use of phones. Some parents in the audience were surprised to learn that it is illegal for teens to drive with a hands free device and are prohibited from using smartphones in any capacity - even as navigational tools.
A lengthy portion of the discussion addressed both the legal and moral obligations we have to keep our teens safe despite pressures to engage in underage drinking and drug use. Mr. Casey advised parents in the audience to call parents to confirm an adult presence at house parties and also to determine if alcohol will be present. Mr. Casey underscored the importance of understanding a homeowner’s liability if alcohol is served to minors on their property.
Many parents lingered to continue the discussion following the event, and Mr. Casey will be invited back to speak directly with the students at an upcoming assembly.
