The Hopkins Committee of Trustees has announced that Vince Calarco, who has had a major impact on Hopkins during his time as a Trustee, a total of 20 years including 18 years as President, will be stepping down from the role at the end of this month. The Committee simultaneously announced that Gwen Evans ‘84, who currently serves as the Committee’s Vice President, has been unanimously elected by the Committee to serve as its next President, effective July 1, 2023.
Vince initially served on the Committee of Trustees from 1990 to 2000. Among his many accomplishments during that time was his spearheading of the 1993 acquisition of 52 acres of woodland contiguous to our campus. He also helped to lead a successful capital campaign that fueled both significant growth in our endowment and the School’s subsequent expansion, which included the Malone Science Center, Heath Commons, and a number of athletic facilities. During Vince’s second term as President, beginning in 2013, the Committee has focused on increasing scholarship resources and expanding Hopkins’ academic programs, including advancements in STEM and other strategic initiatives.
In 2012, Vince and his wife Linda, parents of two Hopkins graduates – David ‘93 and Christopher ‘96 – generously enabled the rebuilding of our school library, which was named in honor of their contribution to Hopkins.
In recognition of his exceptional service to Hopkins, Vince was presented with the Hopkins Medal in 2001. During his first term, he also served as CEO of Crompton Corporation, CT.
"We thank Vince for his service, which has left an indelible mark on Hopkins School," said Head of School Matt Glendinning in an email to the Hopkins community.
Gwen Evans ‘84 is the daughter of Robert ‘54 HGS and sister of David ‘81. As a member of the Committee of Trustees since 2015, she has played a key role in many important initiatives through her work on the Finance, Education, and Trusteeship committees; her role in crafting a strategic plan during Dr. Kai Bynum’s tenure as Head of School; and most recently, her co-chairing the search committee that resulted in my hiring. Prior to joining the Committee of Trustees, Gwen was an investment banker in New York and London for over twenty years.
"As one of the oldest educational institutions in the nation, we are indeed very fortunate to have such capable, visionary leadership at the governance level. I hope you will join me in thanking Vince Calarco for his tireless commitment to Hopkins, and welcoming Gwen Evans as the new President of the Committee of Trustees," said Glendinning.
