The Hopkins Cross country teams traveled to the Canterbury School for the 45th annual Canterbury Invitational on Sat 9/23.
The girls ran 1st. Hopkins was still missing its number 2 runner, Madeleine Walker, but still put two runners in the top 10. On a brutally hot day, Junior Maliya Ellis was 2nd in 19:41, and sophomore Elena Brennan was 7th on the notoriously holly course. In the more competitive division 1 race, the team was 4th overall, 2 pts behind 3rd place Hotchkiss. Deerfield Academy (MA) was 1st and Winsor School (MA) was second. Hopkins saw two of its FAA rivals in the race, Sacred Heart (Greenwich) and Greenwich Academy, which finished in 6th and 7th respectively.
In the boys race, sophomore Nic Burtson led at the mile with two runners from eventual champion Loomis Chaffee. During the race he briefly faded to third but ran down the second place runner to take second himself in 16:34. Senior captain Jonah Norwitt was running in seventh place but had to backtrack to run to the correct side of a flag, and in so doing lost about 20-25 seconds and 7 places. He finished in 14th in 17:57 on the hilly course. The first place team was Loomis Chaffee. Second was Hotchkiss and third was Deerfield. Hopkins finished in 4th.
