The Fairchester Athletic Association (FAA) held its first cross-country race of the season on Wednesday, September 20, at Sherwood Island State Park.
All schools in the league participated in 5k races on a beautiful day. All races were scored dually, and all teams participated in the same races (one for girls, one for boys).
The girls raced first. The teams were Greens Farms Academy, Greenwich Academy, Greenwich Country Day, Holy Child, Hopkins, King, Masters, Rye, Sacred Heart Greenwich, and St. Luke's,.
Both the Hopkins boys and girls were coming off undefeated seasons in the FAA in 2022, with the boys' last FAA loss coming in 2017.
Despite missing possibly their #1 runner, junior Saki Tomita due to illness, Hopkins girls won all match-ups. Junior Layla Kenkare was the first Hopkins runner in 5th place overall, followed by senior captain Ava Maccaro, returning from injury, in 11th. Junior Claire Billings finished in 15th place, followed by freshman Ksenia Podoltseva in 17th. Senior captain Anna Capelle rounded out the scoring in 20th place.
The boys race featured Brunswick, Greens Farms Academy, Greenwich Country Day, Hopkins, King, Masters, Rye, and St. Luke's.
Like the girls, the boys won all their matchups.
Junior Lucas Llovera was the first Hopkins runner, finishing 3rd overall, followed closely by senior captain Preston Parker in 4th. Junior Will Davitt was 9th, and senior James (Jay) Maroney was 11th. Junior Logan Matthews was the 5th Hopkins scorer in 17th place.
Full results for both races can be found
here. Even though the championship-style score is listed first, only the dual scores listed afterwards count in the regular-season races.
Hopkins next races at the Canterbury Invitational on Saturday September 23, at the Canterbury School in New Milford.
A very encouraging start for the teams!
