Hopkins Crew is a robust community of experienced and novice athletes who embrace the challenge and pleasure of learning to row well. Crew has been a part of Hopkins Athletics since 2008. Hopkins Crew rows out of the New Haven Rowing Club on the historic Housatonic River in Derby, about 30 minutes from campus. The crew races at multiple spring regattas throughout New England as part of the New England Interscholastic Rowing Association. Over all, the program strives to develop students’ rowing skills and athleticism while fostering a love for the sport.
Boys Head Coach Sarah Cussler joined the Crew Program in the 2024 season. She first rowed competitively as a Yale undergraduate and has been a masters competitive sculler and sweeper for the past 15 years. She has medaled at multiple regional and national regattas, largely in the double scull, but also in group sculls and sweep boats. Most recently she had the pleasure of winning her first race with her daughter, in a Parent Child double. She loves the sport and is excited to help students meet and exceed their goals this year, both on land and on water. At Hopkins, Coach Cussler teaches English and is both a former and current Hopkins parent.
Head Girls Coach Leonti Dailis got his first taste of rowing at the New Haven Rowing Club back in 2008 and has been an enthusiastic and competitive rower ever since. As a parent of a Hopkins rower, he helped and later became an assistant to the head coach Nat Case who built the Hopkins Crew program. Coach Dailis expanded his coaching experience by helping local junior clubs during the fall seasons. A US Rowing Level 2 certified coach, he is passionate about rowing and enjoys coaching anyone who wants to learn the sport.
