Alumnus Fellow Peter Bailey '94

On Monday, May 2, Hopkins welcomed Peter Bailey ’94 back to campus as an Alumnus Fellow. Peter spoke at assembly about his life beyond Hopkins, including Dataminr, the company he worked with his brother to begin as a start-up in 2009. He and his brother saw social media platforms emerging as the front line for information in real-time, and worked with developers to create the technology to sort and filter millions of posts into relevant information. Dataminr is a real-time information discovery company, whose analytics engine pulls info from social media streams, such as Twitter, and evaluates that data for trending topics and early alerts on noteworthy events. Peter explained the information gleaned from people “tweeting” in an area where an emergency situation is unfolding can alert local police and first responders sooner than waiting for someone to call for help. Dataminr serves not only government clients, but also clients in Finance, the Public Sector, News, Corporate Security and Crisis Management. Peter also shared the ways in which his Hopkins education prepared him for life beyond the Hill, and also that working with charities and being a father are the most important things in his life. After assembly, Peter attended classes throughout the morning including Economics, New Haven History and AP U.S. History. A luncheon in his honor was held in the Weissman Room with faculty and students.

Peter Bailey is currently Chief Strategy Officer for Dataminr. Prior to joining Dataminr in 2009, he was General Manager of IAM, where he was responsible for all areas of operations, including strategy, sales and marketing. Peter also serves on the board of B*CURED, a charity devoted to funding brain cancer research. After Hopkins, Peter earned an A.B. in English and American Literature from Harvard University, and an M.B.A. in Entertainment, Media and Technology from New York University.
