Ching '20 Takes the Bronze

Sapphira Ching ('20) achieved third place (Bronze) in the Youth14 women saber tournament at the North American Cup, held in Kansas City, Missouri. Nearly 90 sabreuse from US and Canada competed in this event. Sapphy started the tournament as the 22nd seed, and unfortunately incurred anankle injury at the beginning of her direct elimination bout. After consulting with the event's head athletic trainer and her coaches about all risks involved, she decided to continue the competitions and see how far her grit could carry her. She defeated Canada's #1 sabreuse from Montreal 15-10 to enter quarterfinals; and then defeated the USA top 3 / East Coast #1 sabreuse from Atlanta 15-13 to get into the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, she lost 8-15 to the #1 seed from California who went onto win the Gold.

After this surprising result, Sapphira has recaptured her US Top10 ranking. Now with a USA Fencing rating of B2017, she officially became the first Youth14 sabreuse from Connecticut this season to achieve Division I status. Sapphira remains the highest level three-weapon teenage referee from New England sanctioned by USA Fencing.
