Hop Girls Tennis Takes Break-out Win over GFA

Susan Bennitt
It was a great day to kick off the season for the returning 2018 Undefeated, FAA and New England Champion Hopkins Girls Tennis Team. With a 3-0 scrimmage season record in our favor, with wins over Amity 5-2, Weston HS (State Champions) 5-2 and Choate 8-1, we were excited to get FAA competition under way. GFA came back strong this year with some new faces, and after the first half hour of play, it wasn't at all clear which way things would go. Viv and Lera were down 0-3 at 1 doubles. Courtney at 3 singles lost her first set 3-6. Although Margot and Rehab at 2 doubles had won their first set 7-5, the second one wasn't going as well and they lost it 4-6. There may never have been so many tie breaks in an FAA match! In any case, Viv and Lera screamed past their opponents to win the first set 6-3, and take the match at the second set of 6-1. Margot and Rehab went into their split set tie-breaker to win 10-8. While Courtney slowly turned her match around with mindful, consistent play, Olivia at 1 singles and Juliana at 3 took theirs in strait 7-5 and 6-1, and 6-0 and 6-2 sets, and Courtney battled it out to a huge win decided by the 12-10 tie break. Caroline (Captain) and Anisa at 3 doubles needed a tie break to decide their first set 7-6, but went on to dominate the second with a 6-1 win, giving Hop the overall 6-1 win over GFA. We're pleased with the hard work all the girls have put in so far to start off the season with a bang! Congratulations to all of our players, new and "old"!
