Hopkins Sojourned to Greenwich for its last match of the 2021 season. We had high hopes of concluding with a victory and were extremely pleased that all of our players won their individual contests today. These matches were earned with grit, grace, and solid tennis.
Jay won the first point of the match, again (!). He played a flawless game of tennis that quickly overwhelmed his opponent. Andy and John also earned quick victories. Congratulations, Capt. John, on winning your final match for Hopkins! Teo's match lasted longer as his opponent engaged him in lengthy rallies.
Despite having lost the first four singles matches, GCDS rose to the challenge in the doubles matches, and the temperature and humidity climbed along with their games. Lucio and Emmett were a powerful duo today, with Emmett hitting countless forehands cross-court to set up Lucio's dazzling poaches and overheads. Congrats, Emmett, on earning a win for your last match!
#2 doubles Jeremy and Luke had to get adjusted to the heat and to the net game of their rivals. They took the reins of the match at 4-4 and didn't let go. Excellent work, boys!
Jacob sure had a workout today in his #5 singles match. He served and returned beautifully and outlasted a very consistent opponent who made a late charge in the second set. Bravo, Jacob!
The last match of the day was a real barn burner. Johnny and Matthew encountered a formidable team in Solari and Martínez, who worked well together to fend off charges from our boys. Johnny and Matthew scraped by to claim the first set, but the match remained touch-and-go in the second. Although they were able to even the second set at 6-6, Solari/Martínez took the 'breaker 7-4. But while Matt and Johnny lost that second-set tiebreaker, they must have figured out what it was they needed to do (consistent cross-court drives and poaches) in order to win the ten-point tiebreaker to decide the match. Team Guo/DeLaurentis surged ahead to score the final "W" for the sweep. Excellent work, guys!
It has been such a privilege to work with these young folks and to see them improve so much over the season. We are so proud of the team's hard work, sportsmanship and team camaraderie. Thanks so much, boys, for giving 110% every day.
