HOP took the scenic route, which included taking the van across a river on a REAL COVERED BRIDGE!! We made it up to Salisbury in good time and were able to begin our doubles matches on Hotchkiss's very nice 3-court indoor facility. Our guys were outmatched at 1 and 3 today, and unfortunately we weren't able to see if Jake and Gray would be able to end up on top in their match where they had a slow start but had won a few games in a row to get back on serve at 5-6.
With the doubles point earned by Hotchkiss, we went outside for singles to play on six of the many very nice courts Hotchkiss has on their athletic facility. Everybody put up a great fight and all spectators were treated to some beautiful tennis. Eric was champing at the bit after the doubles loss and he was able to take a commanding lead early on in his match, ultimately closing it out with agressive play and good shotmaking. Jake had a close one today against an opponent with a solid forehand and quick feet. Gray's opponent stunned him in the first set but he is not one to give up. He rallied back brilliantly in set 2 and came really close to winning it. Aarya's match could be described in the same way, where he really had some brilliant shots in the second set that made it look like just maybe...
Although we had lost the match at this point, everyone's attention turned to the last to bouts that were still happening, because they were close and they were exciting. Max jumped to an early lead in both of his sets but his rival kept finding a way to climb back in with a string of tough serves, great passing shots and good digs that thwarted some of Max's beautifully executed strategies. Ultimately Max prevailed when he stymied a comeback by winning his serve at 5-4.
The last match on the court was our #6, Freshman Aidan Ke, who dropped the first set to a player with a big serve, big topspin and great court coverage. Aidan was able to regroup and to make use of his own solid shotmaking skills to climb back into the second set and claim it 7-5. And he rode that momentum in the deciding tiebreak with brilliant shots, playing with duende. Congratulations, Aidan!
We will get back to the courts to practice tomorrow and Friday--someone told me that the sun negotiated a deal and is no longer on strike so we should be warmer the next few days. Our next match will be at home on Monday for FAA play vs. St. Lukes.
