First Empty Bowls Fundraiser Connects Hopkins with New Haven Organizations

On Thursday, Dec. 11, the Community Service Office hosted an "Empty Bowls" fundraiser in Heath Dining Room before that evening's winter band concert.

This unique supper event brought together Hopkins families, faculty, and staff for a simple meal of homemade soup and bread, made and donated by Hopkins families. Attendees had the choice of purchasing a meal or a meal and a handmade clay bowl to bring home. A collection of 30+ bowls were made and donated by Jackie Labelle-Young and her pottery students.  All the proceeds from the event were donated to local food pantries and food banks. Representatives from the Sunrise Cafe and Havens Harvest, including Hopkins Alumna Lori Martin, also attended the event and spoke about the impact of supporting their organization.

Many thanks to Alissa Davis, Jackie Labelle-Young, Hilary Tanner and Dorothy Tolchin for organizing this cozy evening for the Hopkins community.

A Note of Thanks from the Organizers:
Thank you to the artists, soup makers, bread bakers, diners, faculty & staff, parents, students, Maroon Key, HPA and everyone involved in last week's first-ever Empty Bowls Dinner.  We raised $650 which we will contribute to the Student Council's annual fundraiser that will kick off officially in the spring.  This money will go to Sunrise Cafe.  Here's some information to give you a sense of how far this donation will go:
$500  - Covers the cost of feeding every guest who walks through the Sunrise Cafe's doors for an entire morning, about 150 to 200 people who might otherwise go hungry.
