Reunion 2017

Hopkins' 2017 Reunion took place on June 9–10, with more than 600 alumni/ae and guests returning to campus. Alumni/ae attended a luncheon under the tent, attended special programs led by Hopkins faculty, played in the Alumni lacrosse and baseball games, enjoyed family activities and the culminating point of Reunion: dinner under the Big Tent with a rocking musical backdrop provided by the Reunion Band!

Reunion began on Friday, June 9 with a reception at Swensen House for all classes, as well as class-organized parties at local restaurants and homes.

Events began on Saturday morning with a Run/Walk in honor of retired faculty, Clay Hall, as well campus tours. A casual picnic lunch was served under the tent this year. Following the lunch, families enjoyed activities on Pratt Field including an inflatable obstacle course, cornhole, face painting, balloon animals and fresh-popped kettle corn. Families and friends also enjoyed watching the alumni lacrosse game on Parr Field and the alumni baseball game on the outer fields.

Afternoon events included a State of the School session with Head of School Kai Bynum in Thompson Hall, as well as a Back to Class: 21st Century Democracy session with History faculty and school archivist, Thom Peters in the Weissman Room.

A highlight of the afternoon was a lovely celebration of the Women’s Schools in Thompson Hall. High tea was served to the gathered alumnae, faculty emerita, Trustees, students and friends who heard from Head of School Kai Bynum, and Connie Frontis ’67 DPH as well as current student Lilliana DeLise ’20. The program highlighted the history of the women’s schools: Day Prospect Hill, Prospect Hill School, the Day School and Miss Kate’s School; and celebrated the 45th anniversary of the merger of Day Prospect Hill School with Hopkins Grammar School in 1972. Many thanks to Nory Babbitt ’76 & Gail Brundage ’76 for conceptualizing the event, and to Thom Peters, History Faculty and Archivist for providing access to the archived materials.

Also in the afternoon, the second annual meeting of the Black Alumni/ae Network took place in the Weissman Room, where the group engaged in important discussions about racial equity and representation on campus and beyond with Head of School Kai Bynum.

As the daytime activities came to a close, more Reunion alumni/ae arrived on campus for the evening's cocktail hour and dinner under the tent. After dinner, Jim Lawson and the Faculty Reunion Band rocked the tent with classics from the decades. Band members were Ian Melchinger '88, Amanda Friedman, Ian Guthrie, Dan Gries, Sarah Belbita, Karl Anderson, Josh Gleason, Dylan McDonnell ’11 and Jim Lawson. A special surprise performance by Gerry Giaimo, Matt Black and Jeremy Kasha, all 1987 classmates capped the evening.

It was a successful and joyful Reunion for the hundreds of alumni/ae who returned to Hopkins, to reconnect with one another and catch up with life on the Hill.

The oldest class to return to Hopkins this year was the Class of 1952 HGS. The class with the highest attendance was the Class of 2012. Alumni/ae travelled from all over the globe to come home to Hopkins, with one member of the class of 2012 traveling from Borneo, and another from the class of 1967 HGS traveling from New Zealand. Thank you to everyone who attended and made this a successful Reunion!
