Student volunteers make mats from "plarn"

Students taking the J School community service activity and other volunteers were busy “plarning” on Wednesday afternoon, November 28 in Heath. Mrs. Skalka and volunteers from Tower One/Tower East taught the group how to make “plarn” or plastic yarn, from plastic bags and crochet it into mats. The goal is to make at least 65 plastic mats to distribute to homeless members of the New Haven community to help them keep warm this winter. Each mat is made from over 600 plastic bags and takes many hours to make. If you would like to donate plastic bags to the cause, there is a collection box in Thompson Hall.
