Hopkins Falls in Opener

As the rain dripped from their white lids, the Hilltoppers readied themselves for the first test of the season. A bus load of New Yorkers came over the hill as Hopkins was set to face Harvey in only the second meeting of the two teams. The scrap began, as Hop quickly netted two goals. A fast response from Harvey and we were off to the races. The rain led to typical errors: dropped passes and untameable ground balls, but the team fought on. Two early goal saving knock downs by freshman defenseman Derin Bahtiyar, who was later ruled out with a wrist injury, set the tone for pestering team defense for most of the affair. Save for a few minor lapses, the defense was able to keep Harvey’s strong right handed shooters at bay, despite seeing lengthy stretches of possession. Offensively, the Hilltoppers struggled to care for the ball. Junior Matt Goos and senior Toby Scheps both netted three goals, with efforts that surely could have yielded them more. The fourth quarter saw Hopkins in a four score hole. Tall, but not unachievable, was the task as captain Eli Ratner continued to put his body on the line at the face off x. The effort never stopped. As the fights for ground balls intensified and the rain drenched both fans and players, tempers flared. A late hit led to several ejections on the Harvey side as Hopkins now found themselves two men up with time dwindling. As last ditch efforts went wide, high, or short the clock ran out. Still, the team honorably rushed to the clutches of their heroic goalie and leader, Brendan Cafferty, who, despite the conditions, stopped an astonishing 18 balls from hitting the back of the net. The Hilltoppers remain at home to face The Storm on April 2nd.
