This Saturday, Hopkins geared up to face their FAA rivals and toughest opponents of the season so far. Brunswick have been formidable rivals in recent years, and this match was no different: both teams played fiercely and fairly in this highly anticipated (and highly competitive) battle.

All seven matches took the courts promptly at 2:00, with #2 and #3 doubles utilizing the two newly-built courts that add to Brunswick’s already impressive athletic facilities. Max lost serve early against his opponent and despite multiple opportunities, fell to the steadiness and fitness of his opponent. Alex’s match went similarly, though he fought valiantly to counter his opponent’s aggressive ground strokes and crisp volleys. Jay struggled against Brunswick's #4 today and was unable to convert a few turn the tables to his favor.

Doubles 2 and 3 were fierce today. Lucas and Karun came out swinging and used strong ground strokes and well-placed serves to outdo their opponents, despite a second set charge. Lucas smashing forehand volleys and seizing control of the net was a recurring theme here. Special kudos also go to Jacob and Jake, who clinched a nail-biting encounter in their first match as partners. After losing the first set, they rallied to blow away their opponents in the second, before an up-and down tiebreak saw them save a match point and come out on top. Bravo!

The longest two matches ended up sealing the result for our opponents. Andy and Bryan played their first match together at the #1 doubles spot, and after surrendering a tough first set, fought hard in a tense second that saw them save two match points to hold at 4-5. Unfortunately, their opponents’ persistence saw them break at the next opportunity to seal the win for Brunswick. Despite a poor start, Teo was able to shift the momentum of his match by getting an early break in the second set. After many long rallies that showcased his grit and steely determination, he took the second set. Despite the match already being lost overall, he ended the day on a positive note and won his match in a tiebreaker.

Although it wasn’t the result we wanted, there were many positives to take from today’s performance. We’ll train hard before hosting Kingswood-Oxford on Wednesday. Onward!
