The Hilltoppers made the sojourn to the beautiful Northwest corner of the state to face the Hotchkiss School, a strong rival of the New Englands Class A bracket.

Play began with the doubles, where Andy and Teo claimed an early lead and kept the pedal to the metal. Max and Lucio exchanged a few breaks of serve before they got used to the powerful returns of Hotchkiss's #1 duo. D1 and D2 ended in our favor within a minute of each other. D3, a close one in which Lucas and Alex overcame a 1-5 deficit, was abandoned at 6-5 in our favor.

Singles took to the courts at 6 PM. Lucio nabbed the second point for HOP with a relentless campaign for the net. Teo was also in fine form with blistering backhand winners and formidable all-court strategy. The remaining four points were up for grabs and all contests were close. Unable to capitalize on a few chances in the first set, Max dominated the second. Hotchkiss #1 jumped ahead in the final tiebreaker however. Max fended off five match points before coming up a bit short today.

Attention was drawn to the middle court, were Capt. Toft was holding his own against a wily opponent. Andy gave 110% effort, and even dazzled the audience with a number of memorable shots, including a Hail-Mary forehand slice on the run to the opposite corner for a winner. Unfortunately, Hotchkiss #5 claimed the tiebreaker of the second set, earning a second point for his team.

As darkness began to fall, the fate of the match rested on the shoulders of Lucas and Alex. Alex was still competing for the first set, which included long rallies and multiple ad points in every game. Alex mustered the fortitude to earn the tiebreaker with sound strategy and steady shot-making. Would he have enough daylight to win the match?

Meanwhile, we started to hear some "Come On!"s and "Let's Go!"s echoing from the direction of the #6 singles. After quietly dropping the first set, Lucas elevated his game and his ánimo along with it.  In set 2, he hit more corners, popped more overheads, scooped more returns, and took the tiebreaker. Just as it was getting too dark to see the ball, Lucas held off a final charge from Hotchkiss #6 to win by two points, clinching the match for HOP!

We're very proud of the hustle that every member of the team gave in this exciting match. We don't have to wait long to see more action, since we are squaring off against GCDS (in the FAA format) only 24 hours later, in Greenwich. Wish us luck!

YEAH HOP!!
