Michael Zhou '16 Semi-Finalist in Intel Science Talent Search
Michael Zhou ’16 has been selected as a semi-finalist in the Intel Science Talent Search, the nation’s most prestigious pre-college science competition. Michael is 1 of 4 high school students from Connecticut to be selected. Each year nearly 2000 students from across the nation enter the competition, with 300 selected as semi-finalists. The semi-finalists and their Schools each receive a $1,000 grant.
“My project is in the field of green chemistry and its title is "Prevention of Cellulose Carbonization during Hydrothermal Treatment and Related Catalytic Redox Techniques", said Michael. “My project seeks to solve a problem in current green chemistry: the ability to refine plant matter, cellulose, into high quality biofuels or glucose.“ Michael completed all of the research over seven weeks last summer during an internship at Michigan State University. Forty finalists will be invited to Washington, DC in March for final judging.
