The Elm City International - Hopkins Gives Event

On Friday, April 27, Hopkins hosted a fundraiser for the benefit of Elm City Internationals. ECI is a local nonprofit organization that uses soccer to provide academic support to local underprivileged students. To participate, each student had to get 10 friends or family members to sponsor them by donating a minimum of $5 to Elm City Internationals. The goal was to get as many new donors as possible. This year, with the help of this fundraiser, Elm City received the most new donors, and therefore won a $10,000 grant from the Great Give for the second consecutive year.

Founder Lauren Mednick (Hopkins alum, class of 2002), expresses her thoughts on the fundraiser:  “The ECI-Hopkins-Give tournament is always a great deal of fun. It encourages students from Hopkins and ECI to come together through their shared love of soccer. As a Hopkins alum, I truly value the educational opportunities that Hopkins provided me with and strive to open the same opportunities for all ECI students. It is great fun to have so many academically motivated Hopkins and ECI students in the same room and the same time playing the sport that they love.” Lauren also expressed her thanks towards the Hopkins families and students who helped ECI achieve the $10,000 Grand Prize.

Boys Varsity Soccer head coach Mr. Addison, also enjoys this fundraiser because of the connections with Hopkins School. He says, The connections between Hopkins and the Elm City Internationals run deep. Founder Lauren Mednick is a Hopkins alum and several ECI students have gone on to study at Hopkins. We were fortunate to host an ECI fundraiser as part of The Great Give.”

From 6:00-7:30, about 20 Hopkins soccer players, along with some Elm City students, played 4v4 futsal in the gym. There were four teams: pink, yellow, orange, and green. After a round robin tournament style of play, the final match came between orange and green, with orange coming out on top. The tournament was a great way to have some fun playing the great game of soccer, as well as benefit for a great local organization. All the participants enjoyed connecting with the Elm City students and playing soccer with them. The fundraiser was a great success and will hopefully achieve higher goals next year.
