Seniors George and Jake Wang Play Chess on World Stage
Hopkins seniors George and Jake Wang represented the United States in the World Youth Chess Championship in Mumbai, India from October 1 through October 13. The brothers joined 13 other nationally ranked U.S. chess players to form the U.S. cohort.
Individually, George and Jake had notable victories over Bulgaria, Chinese Taipei (Taiwan), South Africa, and Slovakia, and notable draws with Italy, Latvia, and Nepal. Jake impressively won or drew 75% of his matches. Overall, the United States team finished seventh out of 64 countries.
At Hopkins, the Wang brothers run the Chess Club, through which they organize the annual Connecticut State Grade Chess Championship hosted in Heath Commons. The tournament draws nearly 150 players from all over the state. The brothers launched the tournament as freshman at Hopkins three years ago. The 2020 tournament at Hopkins will be held on a date to be determined in February 2020.
In addition to their work at Hopkins, the two are co-founders of Chess Haven, a nonprofit that teaches chess to children in New Haven. Through the organization, the brothers developed a Common Core Aligned Chess Curriculum in 2018. It is currently being distributed to schools in all 50 U.S. states and over 20 countries.
