FAA meet 1 write-up
On Wed, September 17, the FAA held its first regular-season XC meet. The race was 5k, and took place at Sherwood Island State Park. All FAA cross-country teams took part: Brunswick, GFA, Rye, Holy Child. Hopkins, Masters, Saint Luke's, King, Sacred Heart, Greenwich Academy, Greenwich Country Day.
In regular season meets, all girls run at the same time as each other, and all boys at the same time as each other. There is no pre-determined varsity line-up, or separate JV races. Whoever winds up being a team’s fast 7 runners are the de facto varsity on that day.
The girls ran first. In terms of likely scorers, Hopkins was without sophomore Anoa Dawson and freshman Audrey Xia, because of injury / illness. Despite GA putting their first two runners far in front of the field, in truly eye-popping and impressive performances, the strength of the Hopkins pack was able to overcome that initial disadvantage.
Freshman Willa Kennedy was 4th overall.
Senior captain Mikoto Araki-Siegenfeld was close behind in 6th.
Senior captain Vivian Huang finished 8th
Sophomore Maddie Blank was 9th
Sophomore Cordelia Thompson was 10th.
Sophomores Josie Schiff and Sasha Bindra rounded out the varsity for Hopkins.
The team as a whole ran hard, with many personal bests, and left the meet encouraged, and looking forward to its next race, the Canterbury Invitational on Saturday, September 20th.
(Even though the timing company calculates “Championhip results” for the meet, the FAA scores its regular season dually, so only the dual scores count).

Boys
In the boys’ race, things were different with three teams, Brunswick, Masters, and GCDS all able to put their first three runners in front of Hopkins’s first, assuring dual-scoring victories for them. The Hopkins pack, however, was able to get its 7th runner in ahead of both Brunswick’s and GCDS’s 4th runners, respectively.
Junior captain Daven Kaphar was the first Hopkins runner, in 11th overall.
Junior captain Teddy Sklar finished in 13th.
Junior Julian Peccia was 14th.
Junior Matthew Palsa finished 18th
Sophomore Henry Russell was 19th
Sophomore Jake Vandenpol and eight-grader Gavin Li rounded out the varsity seven for Hopkins.
The team is generally satisfied with its performance, while knowing that it needs to get fitter in order to be able to compete with the stronger teams in the league. The team races next at the Canterbury Invitational on Saturday, September 20th.
Even though the timing company calculates “Championhip results” for the meet, the FAA scores its regular season dually, so only the dual scores count. Interestingly, there is a somewhat unusual discrepancy here between what the dual scores show, and the championship scores, with Hopkins losing to three teams dually, but finishing second overall in championship scoring.
