Varsity Boys Squash vs. Williams, Nov 28
On Wednesday, November 28, the Hopkins boys varsity squash team opened its season against Williams School of New London, at the Kneisel Squash Center. Williams School had a new coach, Ted Childs, who interestingly turned out to be a squash rival of Hopkins head coach Sean Gibbon years ago, when Ted competed for Franklin & Marshall and Sean competed for Amherst. Most of the matches were routine, with Hopkins #1 Spencer Lovejoy, #4 Jack McLean, #5 Justin Lee, #6 Griffin Smilow, and #7 Theo Wuest all winning handily in three straight games. At #2 singles, junior Nader Rastegar traded some long rallies against Williams' senior Carter Levin, with Nader finally prevailing, 11/7, 11/5, 12/10. The closest match proved to be at #3 singles, where tri-captain Doug Schaffer found himself down two games to deceptive left-handed player Adam Verhoeff. But Doug dug down deeply, played with increasing perseverance and determination, and eventually came through triumphantly, 10/12, 8/11, 11/8, 11/7, 11/7. All in all, this 7--0 final result proved to be a strong start for the Hopkins Hilltopper boys squash teram.
