  Black History Month

  Happy Black History Month!
  
  Keep an eye on the Diversity Board and Black Student Union Instagram accounts (@hopkinsdiversityboard and @hopkinsbsu) for exciting events hosted by the Black Student Union for Black History Month. Throughout the month, Diversity Board aims to educate the community on the origins, purpose, and story behind Black History Month. This year's Black History Month theme, as chosen by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) is African Americans and Labor. The theme is meant to focus on how all kinds of work (skilled and unskilled, voluntary and involuntary, etc.) influenced the collective experiences of Black people, and how their world shaped the nation through industry and community.
  
  Additionally, after the new developments in our History and English curriculum to represent more worldwide communities, our curriculum committee will be sending out a survey on the new changes. Please take a moment to fill it out!

  Culture and Community Day

  Hey Hopkins!
  Mark your calendars because next Wednesday is Culture and Community Day!! Come to Upper Heath on Wednesday, April 16th from 12:30-2:30 to share the rich diversity of our campus through free food 🌮🍕🍜, activities (like bracelet making 🪢, calligraphy 🖋, and more!), and great performances 🎶🎤
  Culture and Community Day was a staple of the Hopkins experience for a long time, and after many requests, DivBo has decided to bring it back in a new form. We want this to be an event
  that everyone can participate in, and both share their own cultures and experience new ones.
  Several of the affinity groups will have tables with food and activities, but there’s room for anyone to add to a table. We encourage everyone to contribute to our potluck and share their
  favorite foods! Everybody has unique cultural backgrounds, but equally essential is the way we can come together as a community. Whether it’s a family recipe, or a favorite snack, or even the
  cupcakes you make for every birthday, there will be people to eat it!

  DivBo is back in full swing with another year of community projects, diversity initiatives, and cultural celebrations! We’re working on some new initiatives, starting with answering our most asked question: “What does DivBo even do?”

   

  Some highlights this fall have been:

  • Return of the Salsa Dancers 💃
  • Collaborations with SOL (Society of Latinidad) for Hispanic Heritage Month
  • Native American History Month movie screening of Rez Ball. 🎬🍿

• DivBo SubCommittee Updates

  The Communications subcommittee is working to publicize DivBo projects and other diversity-related events on campus, here on the Summit, and on our instagram @hopkinsdiversityboard. If you’re planning a cultural event, we’d love to help advertise--DM us!!

  
  This fall the Chairs restructured the board to more efficiently represent student interests and energy. Because our subcommittees usually work on longer-term initiatives, we’re starting a new “passion projects” initiative, which will allow students to use DivBo resources to design, propose, improve, and execute projects addressing issues they’re passionate about.

  
  The Curriculum subcommittee is transitioning from their last major initiative, where they worked with the History Department to roll out the more globally-focused replacement for the AC curricula. This fall they’re surveying students about how we can improve the English curriculum.

  
  RealTalk is working to make the platform more accessible for all community members through collaborations with campus publications like The Razor and hopes to help more students share their stories through different mediums, be that visual art, a discussion panel, written piece--remember, a RealTalk doesn’t have to be an assembly speech!!   Outreach is planning collaborations with similar student organizations at other schools. They will also be working with the IRIS club on the Run for Refugees Fundraiser.

  January Update

  DIVBO raised money for the Native American Rights Fund (NARF) at the holiday fair with our cookie decorating station. Thank you to everyone who volunteered at the table and/or bought a cookie!
