Hopkins' 2015 Reunion took place on June 12–14, with more than 400 alumni/ae and guests returning to campus. Alumni/ae attended a luncheon in Heath Commons to hear from Distinguished Alumnus Jim Lapides ’70 HGS, attended special programs led by Hopkins faculty and trustees, many played in the Alumni games, and the culminating point of Reunion: dinner under the Big Tent with a rocking musical backdrop provided by the Reunion Band!
Reunion began on Friday, June 12 with a dinner at Swensen House for classes celebrating their 50th Reunion and above, as well as class-organized parties at local restaurants and homes. School-sponsored events began on Saturday morning with a session with Hopkins Trustees about the Strategic Plan of the School in Calarco Library, as well as a Run/Walk in honor of retired faculty, Clay Hall.
The annual alumni/ae luncheon in Heath Commons followed, where 2015 Distinguished Alumnus Jim Lapides ’70 HGS, spoke about his passion for posters. Jim is the curator and owner of the International Poster Gallery in Boston, Massachusetts. He shared that his interest in this field marries three key topics: art, history and finance. Families who came to watch the alumni games enjoyed food from the cookout, lovingly prepared by Choral Director Erika Schroth, and Trustees Lynn Quinn and Barbara Rosiello. All proceeds from the cookout benefit the concert choir program.
Afternoon events included a discussion with Assistant Head of School and History faculty John Roberts on 21st Century Democracy, and a discussion on Education and Cognition with English faculty Ian Melchinger ’88. Families also enjoyed the magical stylings of Flower the Clown in the Malone Science Center Atrium, as well as a special discovery booth from the Peabody Museum. In addition, alumnus Jeff Strauss '80 offered a special wine tasting in Heath Commons of a selection of wines from his vineyard, Longtable Wine.
As the daytime activities came to a close, more Reunion alumni/ae arrived on campus for the evening's cocktail hour and dinner under the tent. Some classes opened time capsules from their graduation years, while others reminisced and reconnected with old friends. After dinner, the main musical event was Jim Lawson and the Reunion Band, who rocked the tent with classics from the decades.
It was a successful and joyful Reunion for the hundreds of alumni/ae who returned to Hopkins, to reconnect with one another and catch up with life on the Hill.
