Sapphira Ching '20 to Referee USA Fencing Summer Championships

Sapphira Ching, class of 2020, was formerly invited and since accepted to referee at the 2017 USA Fencing Summer Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah. This international tournament, being held from July 1st through July 10th, expects to host over 5,000 athletes from around the world to compete in over 50 events, and is the largest annual fencing competition in the Americas. At 14 years & 3 months, Sapphira will be the youngest three-weapon-qualified referee to officiate at this competition since its debut decades ago (according to a number of maestro coaches and senior FIE referees)! She will engage in full-day referee duties when she is not competing in her events of Cadet Women Saber (U17) and Junior Women Saber (U19). She was the first Youth 14 girl from New England to qualify for these above-age-group championship events in late Fall 2016.

According to USFA National and Regional Youth 14 ranking lists as of May 9, 2017, Sapphira ranks #36 in USA (#8 among girls born 2003), #1 in New England, and #1 in Connecticut.  Congratulations Sapphira!
