Hopkins Science Bowl Teams Secure Strong Finish at Southern New England Regionals

On Saturday, February 21st, two science competition teams from Hopkins participated in the Southern New England Middle School Regional Science Bowl at Smith Middle School in Glastonbury. One Hopkins team advanced through the tournament bracket to finish as the regional runner-up after the final championship match.

The competition, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, featured 28 teams from across Connecticut and Rhode Island. Participants competed in a fast-paced question-and-answer format covering biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, energy, and math. The event began with a morning round-robin where teams were divided into four divisions: Arrhenius, Bohr, Curie, and Darwin. Rankings from these initial six matches determined the top 16 seeds for a double-elimination championship tournament in the afternoon.

Hopkins fielded two teams for the 2026 regional event:
  • The Maroon Team: James C. ‘31, Ruth M. ‘31, Maki S. ‘30, Natalie T. ‘30, and David Z. ‘30. Coached by Jen Stauffer.
  • The Grey Team: Rohee C. ‘30, Walden J. ‘31, Gavin L. ‘30, Advitia M. ‘30, and Kristal T. ‘31. Coached by Kristen Abraham.
The Grey Team finished the morning round-robin with three wins and 366 points, entering the afternoon as the #13 seed. Their tournament run concluded after two matches in the double-elimination bracket.

After entering the afternoon as the #2 seed, the Maroon Team won three consecutive matches to secure a top-three finish. Following a loss to Irving Robbins 1, Hopkins defeated Irving Robbins 2 to reach the championship. The Maroon Team won the first final match 80–62, but fell in the deciding round 130–20, securing them a 2nd place finish in Southern New England.

Congratulations to all the students involved on their excellent play!
