Junior School Mathletes Take First at State MATHCOUNTS: Two Named to Team Connecticut

On Saturday March 28, seven members of the Junior School competed in the State MathCounts competition at Yale University. The students, competing in a team of four, included Sarah L. '30, Daniel J. '30, Jinghan L. '30, and Catherine P. '30; as well as three individual participants - Ethan M '31, Betty Y '30 and David Z '30. The team earned first place with a commanding lead over the second-place finishers.

The MathCounts state competition is a rigorous event featuring nearly 200 of the top mathematical minds from across Connecticut. The competition consists of two distinct phases: the written rounds (Sprint and Target), which test speed and deep problem-solving, and the Countdown Round—a fast-paced, "buzzer-style" tournament for the top 16 scorers.

At the end of the written competition, Sarah L. ’30, Jinghan L. ’30, and Catherine P. ’30 placed in the top 16 for the Countdown Round. Individually, all seven Hopkins students placed in the top third of the state. Jinghan L. ’30 and Catherine P. ’30 finished second and third, respectively, in the written competition and will represent Team Connecticut at the National Competition this May in Orlando, Florida.
