Hilltoppers Erase Stamford Woes, Rally to 22-19 Win
On Saturday, October 3rd, the Hopkins Hilltoppers travelled to Stamford, CT to face off against the King School Vikings. In a thrilling contest, the Hilltoppers held off the Vikings on the final play of the game to win 22-19.
Hopkins started the action in a flash, as John O. ‘28 took the handoff on the opening play of the game and rushed 70 yards untouched (courtesy of a Dillon C. ‘28 double-pancake) into the endzone to take an early lead (followed by a Daniel H. ‘28 extra-point to make it 7-0). King was quick to even the score on their ensuing drive after connecting on an 18-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 7 midway through the 1st quarter. Hopkins continued to lean on the ground game in the second quarter, as quarterback Tommy C. ‘27 snuck the ball into the endzone from the 1 yard line to make it 14-7 with one minute remaining before the end of the first half. In the second half, King cut into Hopkins lead with a QB scramble to make it 14-13 Hopkins, but a John O. and Dylan G. ‘27 tackle kept it a 1 point lead for the Hilltoppers. King scored again on a 55-yard touchdown pass to go ahead 19-14 (failed 2-point conversion) with just over 2 minutes remaining in the 4th quarter. On their final possession of the game, Hopkins would mount a 70 yard touchdown drive with big runs from John O, a long completion from Tommy C. to Dylan G, and finally a 14 yard touchdown run by John O. to put Hopkins back in the lead with 1 minute remaining. Tommy C. scrambled to find Dylan M. ‘28 for the 2-point try to put Hopkins in front 22-19. King quickly moved down the field to set themselves up for a game winning touchdown, but the biggest plays of the game came at the end. King attempted a long throw into the endzone which was swatted down by Adam O. ‘30 and later King attempted one last throw which dropped incomplete as time expired to give the Hilltoppers the 22-19 win!
This was Hopkins’ first road win against King since the 2010 season, breaking a 16 year winless streak when Hopkins played in Stamford. Hopkins also saw a 10 year rushing mark broken, as John O. accounted for 218 yards on the ground and two touchdowns with help up front from Max. A ‘27, Dillon C. ‘28, Holden S. ‘27, Julian K. ‘29, Gage L. ‘29 and Eric L. ‘28. Hopkins will look to build on its 2-1 record when they host Hackley School on October 10th for a noon kickoff. We hope to see many of our fans for the home contest!
