Hopkins Junior School Math Team Deliver Standout Performances at MathCounts Chapter Competition

On Saturday February 14, 2026, fourteen junior school students spent the day at Yale University for the annual MathCounts Chapter competition. Facing off against more than 120 students from schools across New Haven County, Hopkins students delivered standout performances in both written and live rounds of competition.

The New Haven MathCounts Chapter Round is an annual competition held at Yale on the first Saturday of February. Students from across the greater New Haven area register through MathCounts and compete for a chance to advance to the Connecticut State Round.

In the individual written competition, Catherine P. ’30, Sarah L. ’30, Daniel J. ’30, and Jinghan L. ’30 captured first, second, third, and fourth place overall, respectively. That same quartet went on to place first as a team, earning a perfect 10 out of 10 on the team round.

Hopkins’ depth of talent was on full display as six of the top twelve students overall advanced to the live Countdown Round—a fast-paced, head-to-head finale featuring the day’s highest scorers. Representing Hopkins were Catherine P. ’30, Sarah L. ’30, Daniel J. ’30, Jinghan L. ’30, David Z. ’30, and Ethan M. ’31.

In the Countdown Round, David Z. ’30 finished first, followed by Catherine P. ’30 in second place and Sarah L. ’30 in third.
